Small Fish, Big Science

چکیده
Francis Hamilton, the Briton who fi rst described zebrafi sh (Danio rerio) in 1822, would be astounded to see the scientifi c attention now afforded to this two-inch-long native of Indian rivers. A fi sh with no economic worth was how he described this little creature. Yet recently, the European Union awarded 12 million Euros to the ZF-MODELS research consortium to study zebrafi sh models for human development and disease. When and why did zebrafi sh swim from home aquaria into research labs, and what can we learn about our biology from this surprising source?

Big fish eat small fish: on merger in Stackelberg markets
In this note we show that the profitability of merger in markets with quantity competition does not only depend on cost conditions but also on the market structure and on the involved firms’ ‘strategic power.’ Our main result is that bilateral merger can be profitable even if costs are linear – but only in the case of a ‘strong’ firm incorporating a ‘weak’ firm which has adverse effects on welf...
متن کاملEffects of Dietary Conjugated Linoleic Acid and n-3 Fatty Acids on the Performance, Carcass Traits and Small Intestinal Morphology of Broiler Chickens
An experiment was conducted on broiler chickens to study the effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), fish oil, both at 7% of the diet, or their mixtures at 3.5% of the diet, on the performance, carcass traits and intestinal morphology of broiler chickens. The chicks fed with 7% fish oil or 7% CLA diets, were found to have an inferior weight gain in grower and finisher phases, respectively. A...

Big Fish in Small Pond or Small Fish in Big Pond? متن کاملFish market prices drive overfishing of the ‘big ones’
The relationship between fish market price and body size has not been explored much in fisheries science. Here, the mean market prices and fish body size were collected in order to examine the hypothesis that large fish, both among- and within-species, are being selectively targeted by fisheries because they may yield greater profit. Trophic levels, vulnerability to fishing and global landings ...
